Not all causes of knee pain after hip replacement can be completely prevented, and it’s important to remember that you should focus on controlling only what you can control during your recovery. Follow your doctor’s post-op instructions, stick to your physical therapy schedule and talk with your physician about any concerns you have along the way. Really committing to your recovery plan is the best way to help prevent knee pain from developing.
If knee pain does begin to set in, some common treatment techniques that may be pursued include:
- Physical Therapy – You’ll be performing some physical therapy exercises to help strengthen your hip after your operation, but if knee pain develops, some PT exercises that address the knee may be added.
- Anti-Inflammatories – Anti-inflammatories can help to calm inflammation in both the knee and hip if it becomes a problem after your operation.
- Injections – Some patients may benefit from a corticosteroid injection in the knee area, especially if discomfort is causing issues for their ability to rehabilitate after their hip operation.
- Surgery – If knee pain continues to be an issue well into your hip recovery and conservative options are not proving fruitful, a corrective procedure may be recommended.
