Getting a new artificial hip is something you hope to only ever need to do once in your life, and that likelihood only continues to improve as modern technology advances.
According to a study published in The Lancet, today’s hip replacements are nearly twice as likely as older hip replacements to last at least 25 years. Data from about two decades ago found that about 58% of artificial hip replacements were likely to last at least 25 years. The newest report on hip replacement longevity estimates that about 92% of modern hip replacements can expect to last at least 30 years.
“The estimated 92% 30-year survivorship of contemporary total hip replacement suggests that advances in bearing surface technology have greatly improved the long-term durability of total hip replacements and might influence patient counseling, health-care planning and device regulation,” researchers wrote.
How Long Do Artificial Hips Last?
It’s no surprise that today’s artificial hips are lasting longer than ever before, but the level of improvement in a relatively short period of time is certainly impressive. For the study, researchers looked at data from eight national joint registries, covering nearly 1.9 million replacements. Their analysis found that 93% of modern hip replacements last at least 20 years, and additional models found that 91% could keep working well for at least 30 years.
Although the authors note that individual factors also play a role in artificial hip longevity, like age, overall health and bone quality, the findings should give some reassurance to patients who are wondering if their new hip will last the rest of their life. For the vast majority of patients, that answer is a resounding yes.
The findings are also helpful for surgeons who can have greater confidence recommending the procedure for patients who may be an ideal candidate for the procedure but on the younger side of the spectrum. The very real possibility of needing to have the artificial implant replaced 20 years down the road used to be a real concern for patients and providers alike, but now more than 9 in 10 patients are still going strong on their first implant 30 years after the original procedure!
