Anterior Total Hip Replacement Procedure
Dr. Botero performs an anterior muscle sparing total hip replacement that he learned during his fellowship training at Rush University Medical Center under the tutelage of his mentor Dr. Richard Berger, a pioneer in minimally invasive joint replacement surgery.
Dr. Botero replaces the arthritic hip joint without cutting muscles or tendons and without dislocating the hip, a common practice with traditional hip replacement surgery. During surgery, Dr. Botero makes a 4 to 5-inch incision just to the front of the hip bone. Through this incision, the hip joint is exposed using a natural existing space without the need for cutting any muscles or tendons. Dr. Botero then removes the femoral head, while avoiding dislocating the hip joint. Once the femoral head has been removed, a special shaving instrument is carefully used to remove arthritic bone and prepare the acetabulum. The acetabulum (also known as “the socket part of the hip joint”) is now ready.
With the acetabulum now ready, a titanium socket prosthesis is secured with a very tight fit. This new socket is further secured with two screws inside the bone. Dr. Botero places a polyethylene liner inside the new socket for an exact fit. This “new” liner is what replaces the previously worn out cartilage allowing for the smooth function of the new hip replacement.
Fitting the Prosthesis
With the socket now in place, Dr. Botero prepares the thigh bone with use of broaches that help make space for the titanium stem prosthesis. Once the proper steps have been taken for the thigh bone, the titanium stem is secured in the bone for a tight fit. Checking for the perfect fit, stability, motion and exact length Dr. Botero uses a set of trial heads before securing the new ceramic head on top of the titanium stem.
Request an AppointmentWith the final prosthesis in place, Dr. Botero washes the hip joint with an antiseptic solution to prevent infection. Before closing the hip joint, Dr. Botero uses a special injection that is placed into multiple locations inside the hip. This injection helps reduce postoperative pain and overall swelling. On average, the entire surgery takes just over an hour.
After Total Hip Replacement Surgery
After surgery, our patients recover first in a recovery room and then a hospital room at the joint replacement center (a specialized wing of the hospital dedicated solely for hip and knee replacement patients). Within a few hours from surgery, the patient is walking down the hallway, goes up and down a flight of stairs, and goes in and out of a car simulator. The majority of Dr. Botero’s patients are cleared to go home the same day or the very next morning after surgery.
